Transurethral Microwave Therapy for Enlarged Prostate

Transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostate treatment is a procedure that is on an outpatient basis. It is designed to treat symptoms patients have associated with urinary problems because of enlarged prostates. Transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostate is only used when the enlarged prostate is benign and not cancer related.

Transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostates works by inserting an antenna into the urethra of the patient that elicits microwave energy. This procedure is going to heat the prostate internally. A cooling substance flows around the antenna so as to not burn the walls of the urethra. A temperature sensor allows the outside temperature of the prostate to stay at levels that are not too high. The idea behind this test is to kill off some of the tissue of the prostate. Over time, the prostate heals itself and shrinks in size to reduce the pressure on the urinary tract and open the flow of urine back up.

Transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostates is done in a single treatment and is performed as an outpatient treatment. Anesthesia is administered to the patient for this procedure. This procedure provides men with an alternative to medications as it is a single treatment that permanently changes the prostate.

This particular procedure is more effective than medications over the long-term. There is a small population of men that this procedure is not effective. As with any procedure, there is a risk that it does not work.

Just as with any other procedure, there are risks associated with this procedure. The biggest risk with transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostate is that there is an inability to pass urine for a week or more. A doctor will treat this particular problem with a catheter to relieve the bladder and open the urinary tract. Men have also reported erection problems post-surgery as well as retrograde ejaculation. This is an ejaculation that is backward into the bladder. Men also have experiences include irritation of the urethra and blood in the urine.

When men are diagnosed with prostate cancer or may have prostate cancer, transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostate is not a recommended procedure.

For men who are suffering with enlarged prostate, transurethral microwave therapy for enlarged prostate is a great alternative to medication and may prove to be more effective. This can drastically reduce the effects men experience.
