Transurethral Needle Ablation For Enlarged Prostate

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is more commonly known as an enlarged prostate has been treated by the TUNA procedure for close to two decades now. TUNA is an acronym used for Transurethral Needle Ablation for enlarged prostate. Transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate is considered to be a surgery but is catered to in an outpatient scenario and the entire procedure minimally invasive.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia generally has several stages and a wide array of symptoms. Transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate is typically used for large lateral lobes or large median lobes. If the size of the enlarged prostate is not too big, transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate was not used in the first few years after TUNA was approved by the FDA. These days, however, several people opt for transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate. A reason for that has been the long and often limited success of medicines that are prescribed to control the growth of BPH.

Transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate is a relatively simple procedure however there would be quite a few tests depending upon your doctor. Blood tests, urine tests and a cystoscopic test are always carried out. If a patient has any other medical history that has ongoing medications or may interfere with the procedure then there can be other tests as well.

The procedure of transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate involves insertion of a cystoscope through the penis to the urinary bladder. The cystoscope offers visuals of the bladder, the tube that carries the urine from the bladder and also the enlarged lobes. Aided by the cystoscope, very tiny needles are inserted via the same route and once the needles are placed, radio frequency is used to heat up and scar the enlarged tissues. The heat that has to be generated using the radio frequency is 110 degrees centigrade. Time taken for the entire procedure of transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate may vary depending on the doctor and the nature and size of the patient’s enlarged prostate.

Transurethral needle ablation for enlarged prostate is a common surgery and does not have any side effects whatsoever. It is a quick solution for anyone suffering from BPH or any form of problems associated with urine, urinary bladder or tract such as infections or any abnormalities involving the urethra.

TUNA is a popular treatment and in most cases, patients do not have to spend even a night at the hospital.
