Deplorable doctor!!!!! Went in to have a vasectomy done. He doesn't even look at you when he introduced himself. Asked me if I was diabetic. I tried to tell him all my doctors told me that I was pre-diabetic and he interrupted me to say that I was indeed diabetic and then proceeded to argue with me that I was. I told him my primary and my endocrinologist have never told me that I was diabetic. As a patient, I am only as knowledgeable as the information my PCP and Specialist tell me. He was more interested in arguing semantics. I cussed him out and I left. I wouldn't want to entrust my health with someone so petty.

I highly recommend Dr. Zafar if you plan on getting snipped. His office was great with helping me set up my appointments and handing my insurance. Dr himself goes into great detail with the procedure and makes sure you go in fully prepared and confident. I wanted to share my experience with Lakeview Center for Urology, Dr. Zafar, and his team as a testament to the great work they do. This review is a bit lengthy, but I wanted to describe my experience in case anyone else is going through a cancer scare and needs reassurance that they are in good hands.
On March 10, I noticed something seemed “off” while getting ready for bed. I was immediately concerned that what I noticed might be a cancerous tumor, so the next day I began calling urology offices to see if any physician had an opening. Several offices told me there were no openings for weeks. Lakeview also initially had no availability, but the receptionist kindly suggested I call back later that morning since cancellations sometimes happen.
When I called back, they were still fully booked. However, the receptionist asked why I was calling, and I explained that I was very concerned and needed a cancer screening. After a brief hold, she returned and confirmed an appointment for me at the end of the day. They truly went above and beyond to fit me in, and it was a huge relief to know I would be seen right away.
At my appointment, Dr. Zafar agreed the issue was concerning and moved quickly to the next steps. He ordered bloodwork for the following day, and his assistant, Peyton, began calling radiology offices to find the soonest ultrasound appointment. By the end of my appointment Wednesday evening, they had secured an ultrasound for Friday but reassured me they would keep trying to move it earlier.
As promised, Peyton called the next morning and confirmed she had found an appointment for Thursday afternoon. I had bloodwork that morning, the ultrasound later that day, and all results were back by Friday morning. Both the bloodwork and ultrasound raised concern for a malignant tumor. Dr. Zafar called Friday morning, explained the results, and reassured me that surgery would be scheduled as soon as possible.
My surgery was scheduled for the following Wednesday, just days after receiving the results. Dr. Zafar performed the procedure, and he and the surgical team were extremely professional and reassuring as they prepared me that morning. Since I had never had surgery before, I was terrified, but everyone I interacted with was incredibly kind and helped put me at ease.
Dr. Zafar also did an excellent job with the surgery, as I experienced a very smooth recovery. I only needed pain medication twice on the day of surgery and none afterward, and I was able to take a short walk around the block just two days later.
The following Tuesday, I had CT scans to confirm whether the cancer had spread. Both the CT scans and the pathology report were back by Wednesday, one week after surgery. Dr. Zafar contacted me with the results, and I was thrilled to hear the cancer appeared to have been contained and fully removed. I am very grateful for how urgently he moved me through this process.
What stands out to me most is that Dr. Zafar truly practices medicine for the right reasons. In the past, I have encountered physicians who rush through appointments or show little urgency in next steps. Dr. Zafar was the complete opposite and took a personal interest in making sure I received the best and most timely care possible.
One moment that really stood out happened the evening after my initial appointment, when I had gone home feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Later that night, I was stunned when my phone lit up and it was Dr. Zafar calling just to check on me. I have never experienced anything like that before. When my surgery was scheduled, he also personally reached out to confirm I had transportation to and from the procedure, knowing that I live alone in Des Moines and am far from family. I could not believe he took the time to make sure even those details were handled. Throughout the process, he continued to check in, including during my recovery after surgery. I will always be grateful for his compassion and kindness during one of the most difficult times of my life.
If you need a urologist, this is absolutely the place to go.

Bedside manner and patient concerns are just one of the things that this office does with love and care! Dr Zafar even gave me his cell phone number to call on the weekends. He checked on my Dad continuously and took my calls night, day and weekends.
His wonderful assistant Marilyn has been so kind and supportive through this whole ordeal knowing that we live in a different state than our Father. She even called me on her day off to see how Dad was doing. As far as trust….. Dr Zafar is so experienced and knowledgeable and took so much time with us to explain everything he would be doing to help Dad. A brilliant surgeon and a kind and caring gentleman!!! I have nothing but respect and gratitude for this medical practice.

I went to see Dr. Zafar cause of the good reviews and am glad I chose his office. Friendly staff and the Dr. listened to my concerns and set up a follow up after some testing to go over the results and good news. I received a vasectomy here. The procedure was filed with pain. The "needle less* is a joke. They had to keep giving me doses throughout the entire process. After a couple months I still had severe pain so I called back. I was brushed off and told to take a high dose of acetaminophen. I did, it did not work.
I had so many issues, I ended up going to and actual urologist for a reversal. Once that was complete, all my problems were gone. Once you mention where you got your vasectomy, they know exactly what the problem is. THE "DOCTOR".
Just saying. There's a reason he doesn't do any procedures and the local big hospitals and has to go to rural, small hospitals.
Go at your own risk.

My experience with Dr. Zafar was an incredible one. I went into getting a vasectomy pretty nervous, but after the short consultation, my nerves were calmed. He and his staff are very knowledgeable and professional. I loved how quick and easy the process was. I highly recommend Lakeview Center for Urology.

Dr Zafar and the staff were quick, professional, and clearly prioritized patient comfort. We casually talked through the procedure and I was asked multiple times about any discomfort. I have been going to Dr. Zafar for well over 10 years and never had one issue or complaint. Best urologist around. You are always in the best hands with him!! Recently my daughter (18 years old) had Kidney Stones and was in the ER with them. We reached out to Dr.Zafar ASAP. He looked at her CT scan and then gave us a few options, he is always so compassionate, respectful, and completely sympathetic to your pain. He did not mess around with her stones and was able to remove them the next day. He takes the time to talk to you about how procedures go and what to expect. I am so thankful that we have him to help us through all of the kidney issues in the family.

I highly recommend Dr. Zafar and his staff! 10/10 experience. Didn’t feel a thing throughout the entire vasectomy procedure and he did a great job at keeping me comfortable and collected. Currently 6 hours post op and I have zero complaints. Again, I highly recommend even if you’re on the fence. Just go talk to him and you’ll be glad you did!

My husband went in for a procedure at Lakeview. The office staff was friendly, helpful and worked to make sure he was able to get in on our busy schedule. Getting a vasectomy always sounded like one of those things that would be the scariest part of anyone’s life. But Dr. Zafar was an incredibly understanding, considerate professional who made the experience feel as straightforward as getting a haircut done. What I expected to be a painful, uncomfortable hour ended up being a ten minute process that had me surprised when it was already all finished. He was more than friendly, and was attentive at making sure I would go home in the best shape possible. Strongly recommend for anyone in Des Moines, and even for those who might live further out.

Had a very pleasant experience with Dr. Zafar. He did a wonderful job keeping up conversations during my procedure which helped keep my mind off what he was doing. Absolutely zero pain, only very mild discomfort for a few seconds here and there. From start to finish my vasectomy took maybe 12 minutes.

Fawad Zafar, M.D. has been in practice since 1985 and has been serving the Iowa community since 1996.
At King Edward Medical College he was the recipient of the “Most Distinguished Student” award and graduated at the top of his class. Upon completing his medical education, Dr. Zafar went on to pursue his urology training at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and at Ealing and Hammersmith Hospitals in England.
In 1994, he completed a Fellowship in Endourology at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. The focus of his fellow ship was in urinary and bladder stones, male and female incontinence, and male impotence.
